Key Features of the YSM40R Ultra-High-Speed Mounter

⚡

200,000 CPH True Throughput

The dual-arm rotary RS head achieves 200,000 CPH on the 4-beam YSM40R-4 (Yamaha optimum conditions) — the fastest level in its class. Simultaneous pickup and a lightweight head halve pickup time, while the 2-beam YSM40R-2 delivers 58,000 CPH with the MU head for flexible high-mix lines.

🎯

±0.035mm High Precision

RS head placement accuracy of ±0.035mm (±0.025mm high-accuracy) Cpk≥1.0, with ±0.040mm (±0.030mm) on the MU and FL heads. The rigid base and advanced servo control keep fine-pitch QFP and micro-BGA first-pass yield above 99.95%.

🧩

One Platform, 3 Head Options

RS, MU and FL heads cover 0201 chips through 45×100mm components and 25.5mm tall parts on a single platform. No head replacement between jobs — the RS head alone spans 0201 to 6.5×6.5mm odd-shaped parts, keeping lines running.

🪶

Low-Impact Nozzles with ID

Lightweight nozzles with stamped IDs deliver high-speed, low-impact placement for super-tiny components, while ID-based maintenance scheduling and one-touch ANC handling simplify upkeep. RS head uses the 72XX series; MU head 50X/51X; FL head 60X.

📷

Advanced Vision System

The side-view camera detects pickup errors, tombstoning and flipped parts; smart recognition creates component models automatically; an optional coplanarity checker and e-Vision recognition record every recognition image for rapid quality analysis.

🚚

Non-Stop Supply Options

The cATS tray carriage supplies tray components without stopping, and the ZS ultra-high-speed feeder feeds about 40% faster to match the RS head — minimizing reload stoppage on high-volume lines.

📦

Dual-Lane System

Two parallel lanes each handle boards up to L700×W280mm, or a single lane takes L700×W460mm. Two-PCB simultaneous production and automatic program changeover drastically cut changeover workload on high-mix lines.

🔁

MACS Accuracy Compensation

MACS (Multiple Accuracy Compensation System) reads in-machine correction marks during production and compensates for thermal drift and mechanical variation — maintaining placement quality shift after shift.

Industry-Specific SMT Placement Solutions

Automotive Electronics

ECUs, ADAS modules, BMS and infotainment boards demand zero-defect output and full traceability. The YSM40R’s ±0.035mm accuracy and 3-head platform place the entire component mix on one machine, while e-Vision recognition preserves every recognition image — the evidence trail automotive Tier-1 audits require. An optional Automotive Package adds an independently controlled signal tower, automatic nozzle station and chip-dump overflow sensor.

Medical Devices

Diagnostic instruments and precision medical electronics combine fine-pitch miniaturization with strict process validation. The ±0.035mm accuracy and low-impact nozzles protect fragile micro components, and the side-view camera catches pickup defects before rework. Nozzle ID management and e-Vision recognition support the batch-level documentation expected by ISO 13485 environments.

Consumer Electronics

Smartphones, wearables, tablets and smart-home controllers live and die by cost per placement. The 200,000 CPH speed and non-stop supply options (cATS tray changer, ZS ultra-high-speed feeders) maximize uptime on high-volume consumer lines, while fast program changeover keeps high-mix production efficient.

LED Lighting & Display

LED displays and backlight modules place thousands of tiny 0201/0402 LEDs per board. The RS head’s low-impact nozzle prevents damage to adjacent components, the rotary head handles irregular LED shapes without display abnormalities, and the 1m machine width shortens LED production lines — verified at 145,000 CPH in a Shenzhen LED display deployment.

New Energy & BMS

Solar inverters, energy-storage BMS and charging infrastructure boards carry large components and thick copper traces. The FL head (YSM40R-2) places 45×100mm parts and tall components up to 25.5mm, while the MU head handles the general-purpose mix — one platform for the full board.

EMS / Contract Manufacturing

High-mix, variable-volume production is where the YSM40R shines: the 3-head platform removes head-change downtime, fast program recall and automatic push-up pins slash changeover workload, and up to 88 component types on the feeder carriage handle a wide BOM without frequent reloads.

SMT Placement Technology Guide

Understanding placement technology is essential for optimizing your SMT assembly process. Below is a comprehensive technical reference for engineers and process managers.

Understanding CPH: Real vs. Theoretical

YSM40R ratings (200,000 CPH with 4 RS heads; 58,000 CPH with 2 MU heads) are measured under Yamaha optimum conditions. Real throughput depends on board layout, component mix and transport time. Use Yamaha Y.FacT or P-Tool to simulate tact with your specific PCBs before purchase.

The 3-Head Platform: RS, MU & FL

Instead of swapping heads between jobs, the YSM40R carries rotary (RS), multi (MU) and flexible (FL) heads on one platform. The 4-beam YSM40R-4 runs RS and MU heads for maximum speed; the 2-beam YSM40R-2 supports MU and FL heads for broad component coverage — no head replacement, no downtime.

Dual Lane & 2-PCB Production

The dual-lane system conveys two parallel lanes up to L700×W280mm each (or a single lane to L700×W460mm), and 2-stage operation conveys two PCBs of L380×W460mm at once. Two different boards can run simultaneously, raising overall equipment effectiveness on mixed-lot lines.

Vision, MACS & Traceability

MACS reads in-machine correction marks during production to compensate thermal drift. The side-view camera checks pickup posture; smart recognition builds component models automatically; the optional coplanarity checker inspects BGA/CSP balls, and e-Vision records every recognition image for defect cause analysis.

Manufacturing Best Practices Guide

Maximize your YSM40R performance with these manufacturing operation and maintenance guidelines.

Line Balancing & Takt Time

With 200,000 CPH, the YSM40R typically sets the takt time in a high-speed line. Upstream stencil printers and SPI must match; downstream reflow and AOI must keep up. Yamaha Y.FacT simulates the complete line so the mounter is never the bottleneck.

Facility Requirements

Main unit: L1,000×W2,100×H1,550mm, approx. 2,100kg — allow front/rear and side service clearance for the feeder carriages. Power: dedicated 3-phase AC 200-416V circuit (13.9 kVA). Air: 0.45MPa+ clean and dry with an 8mm or larger supply line. Transport height: 900mm. Keep 20–28°C and 50–60% RH for optimal accuracy.

Preventive Maintenance Schedule

The YSM40R self-diagnoses nozzle condition, air pressure and feeder status, then self-recovers or signals for replacement. Standard practice: daily visual checks and air pressure confirmation, weekly nozzle inspection and camera-glass cleaning, monthly axis lubrication and air filter checks, and quarterly feeder maintenance per the supplied operator and maintenance manuals.

Operator Training Requirements

JHIMS provides on-site installation, commissioning and operator training by certified engineers covering startup, program loading, feeder setup and maintenance basics, followed by advanced P-Tool programming where needed. Remote video training and documentation support are provided free of charge.

Frequently Asked Questions

🔧 Technical Questions

The YSM40R-4 (4-beam) reaches 200,000 CPH with four RS heads, and the YSM40R-2 (2-beam) delivers 58,000 CPH with MU heads — both under Yamaha optimum conditions. Real-world throughput depends on your board layout, component mix and program optimization.

The RS head places 0201 (0.6×0.3mm) components up to 6.5×6.5mm at 2.0mm height or less. The MU head covers 03015 to 45×60mm (4-beam) or 0402 to 45×100mm (2-beam) at 15mm height. The FL head (YSM40R-2) handles 0603 to 45×100mm at 25.5mm height. Together the heads cover the full range from super-tiny chips to large connectors without head replacement.

The YSM40R-4 achieves ±0.035mm (±0.025mm high-accuracy) at Cpk≥1.0 (3σ); the YSM40R-2 achieves ±0.040mm (±0.030mm high-accuracy) at Cpk≥1.0. MACS (Multiple Accuracy Compensation System) reads in-machine correction marks during production, compensating thermal drift and mechanical variation to maintain accuracy shift after shift.

Up to 80 types with RS heads and 88 types with MU heads (8mm tape equivalent) on the feeder carriage or fixed plate configuration. Tray components: up to 30 layers with the cATS tray carriage. This capacity suits high-mix production without frequent reloads.

Single lane: L50×W50 to L700×W460mm. Dual-lane (YSM40R-4): two parallel lanes each up to L700×W280mm. 2-stage operation: two PCBs up to L380×W460mm each. Board thickness 0.4–3.0mm and up to 2.0kg per board.

Three-phase AC 200/208/220/240/380/400/416V ±10%, 50/60Hz, with a power capacity of 13.9 kVA and average consumption of about 3.2kW under standard operating conditions. This wide range covers most industrial installations worldwide.

Clean, dry compressed air at 0.45MPa or higher. An 8mm or larger supply line is recommended, and an air dryer and filter on the line side keep the machine performing at its best. RS heads draw up to 180 ℓ/min; MU heads up to 140 ℓ/min.

Four systems work together: a fiducial camera for board mark detection, a multi-camera (50mm field of view, recognizing 0201 up to 45×100mm) for on-the-fly part recognition, a side-view camera that checks pickup posture to detect drops, flips and standing parts, and smart recognition which builds component models automatically.

The cATS tray carriage (compatible with the YSM40R-2) stores up to 30 tray pallet layers and supplies tray components without stopping, exchanging pallets and magazines while production continues. Pallet IDs are scanned automatically so tray positions are identified without manual setup.

The YSM40R runs Yamaha ZS and SS electric feeders. The ultra-high-speed ZS feeder feeds about 40% faster than the standard version to match the RS head’s fast pickup, and the lightweight 8mm version weighs only about 950g — roughly half of competing feeders, with feeder status shown on the machine display.

Yes. Standard SMEMA/GATE signaling is built in for conveyor handshakes, and the SEMI SMT-ELS communication standard (option) enables seamless cross-vendor line integration including automatic program changeover. The machine also supports N-point matching of e-Vision images against AOI results.

It is Yamaha’s approach of covering the full component range with interchangeable heads on one platform so no head replacement is needed between jobs. The 4-beam YSM40R-4 runs RS and MU heads; the 2-beam YSM40R-2 supports MU and FL heads — one platform for every board.

Yes. The dual-lane YSM40R-4 conveys two parallel lanes up to L700×W280mm each, and 2-stage operation conveys two PCBs of L380×W460mm at once. Two different boards can run simultaneously, effectively raising output on smaller boards.

Daily: visual checks and air pressure confirmation. Weekly: nozzle inspection and camera-glass cleaning. Monthly: axis lubrication, air filter checks and feeder condition review. The machine self-diagnoses nozzle eccentricity, air pressure and nozzle appearance, then self-recovers or signals for replacement.

The YSM40R is Yamaha’s ultra-high-speed modular mounter built on the Z:TA-R platform with an all-new connected design, the super high-speed rotary RS head and dual-arm rotary head technology. Compared with the YSM20R (95,000 CPH), the YSM40R-4 more than doubles placement speed to 200,000 CPH.

The YSM40R includes the standard P-Tool basic license for programming and line management, running on the machine’s latest operating system. Advanced options include automatic component data creation with smart recognition and e-Vision recognition image recording.

Yes, when configured with appropriate tooling and a carrier or support plate. The automatic push-up pin system positions support pins precisely from Gerber/ODB++ data, and the low-impact nozzles reduce stress on flex material.

When boards are too large to wait inside the machine, the Stride Board Buffering function lets boards stand by between the upstream and downstream machines, shortening transfer distance and improving line productivity. It supports standby for boards up to L210mm on a single YSM40R.

MACS (Multiple Accuracy Compensation System) is the YSM40R’s in-production compensation technology. It automatically recognizes correction marks inside the machine during production and corrects axis positions, compensating for thermal drift and mechanical variation — this is how ±0.025mm high-accuracy output is maintained.

The system imports Gerber and ODB++ data to reproduce the board geometry, automatically calculates pin placement including non-locatable areas, and positions the push-up pins without operator setup. Combined with automatic program changeover, it drastically reduces changeover workload.

The RS head uses the 72XX nozzle series (7201A to 7208A), the MU head uses the 50X standard or 51X narrow-pitch series, and the FL head uses the 60X series. All nozzles carry stamped IDs for maintenance tracking, and the lightweight low-impact design protects micro components.

Absolutely. For stable low-mix lines, the fixed-plate feeder layout (up to 88 types) offers the most cost-effective configuration, and the 4-beam RS head pair delivers maximum 200,000 CPH throughput. The dual-lane system and 2-PCB conveyance further raise output on smaller boards.

The standard conveyor transport height is 900mm ±10mm, matching typical SMT line heights for printers, reflow ovens and AOI machines. The conveyor height is adjustable to integrate with existing lines; JHIMS confirms the configuration during the pre-installation survey.

The YSM40R uses SMEMA/GATE signaling for standard line handshakes and supports the SEMI SMT-ELS communication standard (option) for advanced cross-vendor integration. e-Vision recognition images can be compared against AOI results using the N-point matching function in the dashboard.

Smart recognition captures a component image and generates recognition data automatically; special-shape components are created by simply enclosing the image, and pickup height for reel and tray components can be taught automatically. Standard P-Tool data entry is supported for all component types.
