Shenzhen LED display maker swapped four Hanwha S2 mounters for two Yamaha YSM40R: placement +123% (65,000 to 145,000 CPH), line 33% shorter, irregular LED defects eliminated.

Why a Shenzhen LED display maker replaced four Hanwha S2 mounters with two Yamaha YSM40R units: 65,000 to 145,000 CPH per machine, lines 33% shorter, irregular LED defects eliminated.
At a glance: who the customer is, where the machine was delivered, and what drove the investment.
LED display assembly is a placement problem with an optical test attached: one rotated, offset or damaged LED becomes a visible bright or dark spot on the finished panel. This Shenzhen maker builds both indoor modules (fine pixel pitch, high module counts) and outdoor modules (larger packages, wider pitch), so one platform has to hold accuracy across both. The stated goal: double output and stop irregular placement defects reaching finished modules.

The customer builds LED displays in Shenzhen on four Hanwha S2 mounters rated 65,000 CPH each and 1.5 m wide. The published account reports low output against a growing order book, a footprint that limited line layout, LED placement defects that showed up in finished displays, and rising operating cost — all consequences of adding machines instead of raising the rate of each machine. JHIMS supplied the replacement: two Yamaha YSM40R units.

The four reported challenges each map to a measurable machine property: low speed (65,000 CPH, below the pace the order book needed) is head architecture; the 1.5 m machine width is layout; the LED defects are a head and vision question rather than a feeder question; rising cost is the accumulated price of running four machines. Framed this way, every symptom becomes testable in a pilot placement trial.
The reported challenges, what each one actually measures, and how the delivered configuration answers it.
| Reported challenge | What it actually measures | Answer in the delivered configuration |
|---|---|---|
| Existing machines rated 65,000 CPH delayed orders | Head architecture and the placements available per pass | Rotary head platform at 145,000 CPH in this deployment |
| 1.5 m machine width hindered line layout | Line length and floor space consumed per placement capacity | 1 m wide machines, shortening the production line by 33 percent |
| Regular LED placement caused display abnormalities | How the head presents an irregular LED to the board | Rotary head placement eliminated the reported LED defects |
| Four machines raised operating costs | Services, spares and maintenance load per unit of output | Two machines replaced four, with lower total configuration cost |
| Growing order volume required more capacity | Capacity measured across a production calendar | Two units added 19,800,000 CPH of monthly capacity |
| Indoor and outdoor modules on the same floor | Component range and program flexibility of one platform | 0201 to 45 x 100 mm range with P-Tool program loading |
| Higher pixel densities expected to continue | Placement accuracy headroom above today’s pitch | Plus or minus 0.035 mm, Cpk at least 1.0, verified in production |

Before selecting the YSM40R, the customer verified four non-negotiable requirements:
All four requirements could be checked on the customer’s own products: doubling placement speed (set against the order book, not a brochure figure), a narrower machine measured as line length and floor space, defect-free handling of the irregular LED packages the customer actually buys, and a total cost below the four-machine configuration — including floor space, services and maintenance load.
Why JHIMS: reliable, high-quality SMT equipment, expert solutions tailored to customer needs, and comprehensive support from design to after-sales.
A ring of nozzles picks, rotates and places while the head keeps indexing, so each pass covers more placements — 145,000 CPH here, up to 200,000 CPH on the four-beam YSM40R-4. Each nozzle corrects its own rotation, so an LED with an irregular body arrives at the correct angle instead of being dragged into position — the mechanism behind the eliminated display defects. Two 1 m machines replaced four 1.5 m machines: line 33% shorter, output per machine +123%.

Three published figures decide how far the platform stretches as the mix changes: component range 0201 to 45 x 100 mm with a maximum height of 25.5 mm (indoor and outdoor families on one machine, no re-tooling); placement accuracy of plus or minus 0.035 mm (or 0.025 mm in the high-accuracy grade) with a Cpk of at least 1.0; and up to 80 RS or 88 MU feeder positions (8 mm equivalent) for high-mix runs. Two units together added 19,800,000 CPH of monthly capacity.
The published before-and-after figures for this project, as reported by the customer and confirmed in production.

| Placement speed per machine | 65,000 CPH | 145,000 CPH, a 123 percent increase |
| Machine width | 1.5 m | 1 m, shortening line length by 33 percent |
| Head type | Linear | Rotary |

JHIMS delivered and installed the two YSM40R units, integrated them with the existing LED display production line, and provided on-site operator training. The machines were programmed with the customer’s indoor and outdoor LED module programs using P-Tool, and production verification confirmed the 145,000 CPH placement rate.

Commissioning concentrated on the two things that decide whether a rated speed is reachable on a real schedule: the programs and the people. Both machines were programmed with the customer’s indoor and outdoor module programs in P-Tool — real board geometries, not a demonstration board — and production verification confirmed 145,000 CPH on them. JHIMS engineers installed, commissioned and trained the shift team before handover.

On video, watch stability rather than the peak number. The head should keep a continuous rhythm through pickup, rotation and placement — hesitation usually means a feeder pickup is not repeatable. The nozzle should place a full group of components per pass instead of shuttling to the feeder bank, and the tape should advance and splice cleanly. The machine’s own screen is the real evidence: rated rate reached with a clean reject log.
The Yamaha YSM40R pick and place machine delivered transformative results for the customer: a 123% speed increase, doubled output per machine, and significant cost savings compared to the previous four-machine configuration.
| Metric | Before (Hanwha S2) | After (YSM40R) | Improvement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Speed (CPH) | 65,000 | 145,000 | +123% |
| Machine Width | 1.5m | 1m | -33% line length |
| Head Type | Linear | Rotary | No LED defects |
The change is in the shape of the line, not only the speed: 65,000 to 145,000 CPH per machine (+123%), two units replacing four, and 19,800,000 CPH of added monthly capacity. Machine width fell from 1.5 m to 1 m, so lines are 33% shorter and the freed floor space absorbs expansion without a new building. Linear to rotary head eliminated the defects behind the display abnormalities — and two machines instead of four brought total cost down.
